Laser tattoo removal costs $150 to $350 per session in 2026 for a typical medium-sized tattoo at a laser clinic or medspa, and a full course runs roughly $1,200 to $2,800 across 8 sessions before adjustments for ink color, provider type, and location. Small tattoos cost less per visit; large and multicolor pieces cost more and often need more sessions to clear completely.

How these numbers are built

The baseline, a $150 to $350 per-session range before adjustments, comes from the pricing model built into this site's own tattoo removal cost calculator. That model scales the base rate by four factors: tattoo size (0.5x for a small piece up to 2.6x for extra large), ink color (1.3x for multicolor versus black only), provider type (1.2x for a dermatologist versus a laser clinic or medspa), and local market cost (roughly 0.90x to 1.35x by ZIP code, reflecting major-metro pricing built into the calculator).

We checked that baseline against outside data. RealSelf reports an average per-session cost of $200 to $500 and an average full-course cost of $530 based on roughly 800 patient reviews, with a ceiling near $1,750 for large or difficult tattoos (RealSelf, updated June 2023). The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists $697 as the average cost of laser tattoo removal in its latest published statistics (ASPS). Neither source breaks its figures down by tattoo size the way this Index does, so treat them as a check on the middle of the range rather than a substitute for the size-based table above.

Session counts follow guidance from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, which notes that tattoo removal is a cosmetic procedure not covered by insurance and typically requires multiple visits spaced weeks apart (ASDS), and RealSelf's reporting that a tattoo commonly takes 10 to 12 sessions to fade completely. This Index uses 6 to 12 sessions as representative counts by size, within the 5-to-12 session range this site's own calculator and FAQ have used since launch. Actual session counts vary with ink density, skin tone, and the laser used. Only a licensed provider can give you a session estimate specific to your tattoo, usually after a test spot.

Cost by size, in plain terms

Small tattoos (under 2 inches)

A small tattoo, something like initials or a simple symbol, sits at the low end of the model: $75 to $175 per session and roughly $450 to $1,050 for a 6-session course. Less surface area means less laser time per visit, which is most of the reason it costs less.

Medium tattoos (2 to 6 inches)

A palm-sized tattoo runs $150 to $350 per session, or $1,200 to $2,800 across a typical 8-session course. This is the calculator's baseline size, and it lines up closely with RealSelf's reported $200 to $500 per-session average.

Large tattoos (6 to 12 inches)

A sleeve section or a large back piece pushes the per-session price to $270 to $630, and a 10-session course runs $2,700 to $6,300. More ink means more passes, and more passes mean more sessions before the pigment clears.

Extra-large tattoos

Full sleeves, back pieces, and other extra-large work carry the steepest multiplier in the model: $390 to $910 per session and $4,680 to $10,920 across a 12-session course. At this size the total commonly runs past RealSelf's reported $1,750 ceiling, since that figure reflects RealSelf's overall patient sample rather than sleeve-sized work specifically.
